The ESV Bible

An essentially literal translation, published by Crossway in 2001 and revised since. It descends from the Revised Standard Version of 1971 and behind that from the King James line, so the cadences are older than the translation is — it is meant to be read aloud and it shows.

The translating principle is word-for-word rather than thought-for-thought: where the Hebrew or Greek is ambiguous, the English is left ambiguous too, rather than being resolved for you. That makes it a good text to study against and a slightly harder one to read cold, which is the trade every translation has to pick a side of.

It has become the default in a lot of Reformed and evangelical churches over the last twenty years, and it is the text underneath the ESV Study Bible, the Reader's editions, and most of Crossway's shelf.
