The fortieth day after Christmas, and for centuries the day the candles for the year were blessed. It lands almost exactly in the middle of Tolkientide, which is a coincidence worth using: light, deliberately, at the darkest, dullest point of the calendar. An old man in the temple takes a baby and calls him a light to the nations.
