Tolkien's word for what a maker does: not creation from nothing, but making inside a world you did not make, out of materials you were handed. It means the woman writing a novel and the man rebuilding a porch are doing the same small real version of the thing that was done to them. Making is not a break from the story. It is how you take part in it.
